BBX Phone ‘BlackBerry Colt’ Will Support 4G LTE

We’ve received confirmation from one of our sources, who is close to the matter, that the first BBX phone will support LTE. If you’re unfamiliar, LTE is short for Long Term Evolution, which is a standard for wireless communication of high-speed data (4G). It is based upon GSM/EDGE and Universal Mobile Telecommunications System/High Speed Packet Access (UMTS/HSPA) network technologies.

A few competitor phones have begun releasing on LTE networks for Verizon Wireless, Telus, Rogers, and others. Should RIM want to keep BlackBerrys having the slightest relevance, an LTE BlackBerry is a no brainer. RIM initially said they would utilize 4G technology once the cost and battery life expectations were met. We’re glad to hear that RIM is looking to release the BBX Phone with support for LTE.

The first BBX Phone, codenamed Colt, will be aesthetically similar to the PlayBook. You can check out the specs we exclusively reported on previously here. The future is bright, despite the company getting blasted by major media and losing marketshare in the U.S. 2012 should make for an interesting year as it marks the end of BBOS, and the rise of BBX.
