RIM Issues Statement Regarding DingleBerry PlayBook Root

A successful exploit to root the BlackBerry PlayBook was released today. The ‘DingleBerry’ exploit utilizes the non-encrypted data backups from Desktop Manager to root the PlayBook. RIM issued this statement in regards to the exploit:

“RIM is aware of reports that a security researcher has released a tool designed to allow BlackBerry PlayBook users to jailbreak their tablet. RIM is following its standard security response process to investigate the functionality and impact of this tool and if needed, RIM will develop, test, and release a software update that is designed to minimize the potential adverse impact to our customers.”

A patch will likely be issued in the next few days to clean up the security holes. This is the first time a BlackBerry product has ever been rooted. It is likely a slap in the face to RIM, especially since the security hole has been a known issue for some time. Nonetheless, if you have the know-how, better root your PlayBook while you can.
