BlackBerry 10 introduces a brand new camera, unlike any before it on previous legacy devices. The new camera has different shoot modes, and has that nifty Time Warp feature.

Ty Williams from InsideBlackBerry has put together 5 tips and tricks for the BlackBerry 10 camera. Check out the five tips and tricks below and let us know in the comments if you know of any additional tips.

1 – Use different Shooting and Scene Modes

The BlackBerry Z10 has lots of options to help you capture the perfect picture depending on your situation, so after opening the camera make sure you review the various options available to you.

For example, in addition to the Normal shooting mode, you also have the option of using a Stabilization or Burst shooting mode. Stabilization is great if you’re like me and can’t keep still when taking pictures. Burst on the other hand is a great way to capture the perfect action shot, such as your dog catching a tennis ball or jumping into the family pool (ed – make sure you are out of the splash zone!). On top of Shooting Mode options, you also have several Scene Modes available to you such as Action, Whiteboard, Night and Beach or Snow.

To access these options tap the icon with three dots that appears in the bottom right corner and customize the settings to your desired preferences.

2 – Move the Focus Box

Whenever you are using the camera you’ll notice a box appears in the middle of your screen. This is the focus box and you have the ability to drag it so it centers on the item you want to be in the sharpest focus.

3 – Fast Preview

Need to review a photo you just took to make sure it’s perfect? Instead of tapping on the previous picture thumbnail that appears in the bottom left corner, touch and hold the thumbnail followed by moving your thumb up or to the right. When you do this you’ll notice that the thumbnail expands, allowing you to verify if the picture is perfect or if you need to snap another one.

When finished, remove your thumb and the image will shrink to the bottom left corner again as a thumbnail.

4 – Copy pictures to your PC or Mac using BlackBerry Link

The easiest way to access, sync, share and organize all your photos, music, videos and other files over Wi-Fi or USB is BlackBerry Link. If you haven’t installed this software yet I highly recommend doing so because it makes working with media files easy. You can also use BlackBerry Link to backup your smartphone, which is something I recommend doing once a month at a minimum.

As mentioned earlier, you also have the ability to copy files to and from your smartphone using a Wi-Fi connection, which makes accessing and managing your media really easy. To learn more about this feature, click on one of the following links.

5 – Put in on the big screen using Media Sharing

You can wirelessly share media files from your BlackBerry device with supported DLNA compatible devices, such as computers, TVs, or other home entertainment equipment using the Media Sharing feature that’s built into your smartphone. Here’s a quick overview of how to enable Media Sharing options for pictures, as well as how to specify which DLNA compatible devices can access your shared media files.

1. Tap Settings followed by Media Sharing
2. Set the Share Pictures switch to On
3. Tap Devices and select the checkbox next to each device that you would like to give access to your media files.
   • To stop sharing media files with a specific device, clear the checkbox beside the device name
4. Tap Back when finished to save your changes

After completing these steps, you can access pictures stored on your smartphone provided you’ve granted access to the DLNA compatible device you are using.

Bonus! Geotag pictures

When taking pictures you have the option to geotag the picture with your current location. For example, I used this feature the last time I was at the family cottage and now I am able to see where I was on each lake whenever I took a picture.

With BlackBerry 10 and playbook, you can add any web based calendar using the calDAV protocol. As long as you are able to access it, you can have the calendar syncing with BlackBerry 10 and the playbook without needing to access an extra account.

Step 1: Create a CalendarFirst, you need to visit the site where you want to set up the calendar. Then you create the calendar and add the info you need.

Step 2: Get Your Calendar ID You would get this in the calendar options or settings. You need to find the web address or web id depending on your service that you are using.

Step 3: Set Up on your BlackBerry On your BlackBerry device, Go to Settings then Accounts. On the bottom, Tap Add Account. Tap Advanced and select CalDAV.

Step 4: Add your calendar detailsA description can help you if you have a number of calendars from the same site but it is not necessary. You need to put your username and password and the server address which you get when you do step 2 and get it from your calendar service. Then you set your sync interval and hit done.

Step 5: Open Your calendarOnce you open your calendar, you will see your dates start to sync in the calendar. It may take a few minutes for everything to start syncing in. But you should be able to start adding and removing events and take it on the go.

Whether for personal or enterprise use, your PlayBook has lots of options for keeping your information safe and secure. You can configure this in the Storage and Sharing options located in the settings. Here’s a detailed explanation of each option:

• USB Connections - Tells the tablet how to react when you plug it in via USB cable. You can set it to Automatically Detect or choose to recognize only Mac or Windows.
• Network Identification - Lets you personalize the tablet network name, workgroup, and username. It comes with a default name in the form of PLAYBOOK-XXXX, with the last four digits coming from the PIN that’s assigned at the factory.
• File Sharing – When turned on, you are allowing access and sharing of files and media stored in your PlayBook anytime it is connected by USB cable to your computer.
• WiFi Sharing - Lets you move and share files over a wireless network.
• Password Protect - Lets you set a password before files can be moved to or from the tablet.

Always make sure you have these settings configured to the appropiate security level for your files. I always recommend being as secure as possible even if all you have is games. Let us know what your settings are.

Some us enjoy listening to podcasts and if you’re a frequent N4BB reader, chances are you’ve heard ours. Your PlayBook can be great for listening and following podcasts. You can use the BlackBerry Podcasts app to download or subscribe to your favorite podcasts. Here’s how to do it:

• To download a podcast just go into de Podcasts app and tap the one you wish to download.
• To display an indicator when new podcasts have downloaded go to settings, select the “Display new Podcast alerts” checkbox.
• To turn off explicit content go to settings and clear the “Allow explicit content” checkbox.
• Set how many podcast episodes your PlayBook keeps, go to settings and change the “When new episodes arrive, keep” field.
• Subscribe to a podcast channel tap a podcast channel you want and tap “Subscribe”.

The BlackBerry Q10 will be the first physical QWERTY BlackBerry 10 device. Unlike the Z10, the BlackBerry 10 QWERTY devices feature keyboard shortcuts.

Some of these shortcuts have been changed. How do you learn the new ones? BlackBerry has made it very easy to know what keyboard shortcuts accomplish which actions.

When in BlackBerry Hub, browser, or other apps, simply open the options section on the right. You see different actions you can take, but look closer and you may see small letters adjacent to the action.

There you have it. Simply go through and see what letter of the keyboard accomplishes that action. Now you can easily command your BlackBerry 10 QWERTY device like you used to on the legacy devices.

Sometimes you need to transfer files to your PlayBook, and while hooking it up via USB is fast and easy, you don’t always have a USB around so you need another option. That’s when Wi-Fi file sharing comes in handy. If you want an easy way, other than USB, to connect your PlayBook to any computer, follow these steps and you’ll be good to go.

1. On your PlayBook, go to Settings > Storage and Sharing.
2. Set the Wi-Fi Sharing switch to On.
3. To set a password to help protect your files, tap Password.
4. Go back to Settings > About
5. In the drop-down list, tap Network and make note of the Wi-Fi IPv4 address for your tablet.
6. On a Windows computer, click Start > Run. Type your tablet IP address like this: \\xx.xxx.xxx.xxx. On a Mac, select Go > Connect to Server. Type your tablet IP address like this: smb://xx.xxx.xxx.xxx.
7. You can now drag files from your PC to the tablet, or from the tablet to your PC.

For all intents and purposes we’ve used a BlackBerry 10 Dev Alpha C. However, it is using a full version of BlackBerry OS 10.1. As you may know, the Dev Alpha C is essentially a Q10 with a different shell. What you see in the video you can expect to be the same experience on a Q10.

All you need to do in BBM on BlackBerry 10 is to hold down the message that failed. This will make the options pop-out from the right.

Click the ‘resend’ option. It’s as simple as that. BlackBerry Messenger will then attempt to retry sending the message to the contact.

BlackBerry World storefront went down for many BlackBerry 10 users. For some, BlackBerry World still hasn’t started working. However, there is a workaround to get you back up and downloading apps. Follow these simple instructions:

1. Tap on the Music app.
2. Tap on more (three dots).
3. Tap on BlackBerry World.

For some unknown reason the main BlackBerry World icon just won’t populate with apps. Untile then, use the workaround and you’ll be set until BlackBerry issues a fix.

BlackBerry Messenger on BlackBerry 10 has a completely new UI and UX. Group pictures in BBM are handled differently than before.

Ever viewed an image and thought it was annoying how it cropped it? That’s just the preview thumbnail! Here’s how to view the full image:

Step 1

Tapping the image once brings up the title of the image and who it was uploaded by and at what time.

Step 2

Tapping a second time, a.k.a. double tap, will open the image in full view. It’s a bit of an annoying user experience. Nonetheless, that’s how you can fully view any image posted in a BBM group picture gallery.

Do you have that one contact on BlackBerry Messenger that is constantly filling up the updates screen? They might be listening to a bunch of music, which each song gets shown to you. You might even catch them looking at porn.

Whichever the case might be, in this tutorial we’ll show you how to block these erroneous updates in BlackBerry 10. You can either block one specific contact or block all music updates. We’ll show you how to do both.

Step 1

Find the updates from the contact you want to block. Press and hold on the update. An option titled ‘Hide Updates’ in the right-side options bar will pop out.

You will then be notified that the updates for the specific contact have been hidden.

The contacts you have blocked can be managed. When on the main section of BBM, swipe from the top down. This will allow you to click the Settings button.

After you’ve clicked Settings, scroll all of the way to the bottom. There you will see ‘Blocked Contacts’ option.

Here you can see every contact that you’ve blocked from showing updates. These can just as easily be deleted.

Step 2

Perhaps, all that you wanted block were the pesky music updates? In the same Settings screen as the Blocked Contacts, you’ll see an option to toggle on/off ‘Music Status Updates’.

Simple toggle that option to whatever you’d like. These two steps will effectively block BBM contact updates as you please.

Purchased your BlackBerry 10 device, but don’t like how it automatically adds “Sent from my BlackBerry 10 smartphone” at the end of emails?

Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered on how to change that and set your display name. Simply follow the few steps below and you’ll be on your way to sending out more customized emails.

Step 1

From within the BlackBerry Hub, click the 3-dot options button to the right in the action bar. This will slide out Hub options. Select the ‘Settings’ option.

This will take you to the settings section, which lets to manage the Hub and a few other options.

Step 2

Select the ‘Email Accounts’ option. This will show all of the email accounts you’ve setup in BlackBerry 10. Select which one you’d like to edit.

Step 3

Once you’ve selected the email account you want to edit, it will show basic email settings for that account. Here you will find where you can either delete the email signature or change it to whatever you’d like.

You can even hit ‘Enter’ on the keyboard to skip down to the next line. That way your email signature doesn’t have to be all on one line.

If changing the email signature is all you’d like to do then you’re finished. All you need to do is hit the back button and get out of the settings page. Your new email signature is automagically saved.

Optionally, you can set the display name of outgoing emails too. Follow these instructions…

Step 4

When in the basic email settings section, you’ll notice an ‘Edit Account’ button in the action bar. Once you’ve clicked that you’ll see more detailed settings for the particular email account.

In those settings is an option to change the Display Name. This is what will be shown to those receiving the emails you send. For example, whenever an email is sent from my account it shows it being from N4BB.COM by the receiving party.

Once you’ve changed the Display Name to whatever you like, click the ‘Save’ button at the top-right. You’re now finished, enjoy.

Within BlackBerry Messenger you can send photos to your contacts. These images sometimes suffer some serious compression once transfered through the BlackBerry network.

However, you can request a higher quality version of the images that are sent to you. In order to accomplish this, you simply press down and hold on the image thumbnail, within BlackBerry 10.

You will then see the following options popup from the right. You’ll see there is an option for ‘Request Higher Quality’. Select this, which will then request from the sender to resend the image, but this time in HQ.

Got a brand new Z10? Awesome! Now you need to get it all set with apps. These are some of the apps I consider a must have on your new Z10. What I love about BB10 is that it already has most of the basic apps you would have to download on other platforms, such as Dropbox, Box, Evernote, etc. So here are some other apps you should try:

Social

Twitter, Facebook and Foursquare are all social apps everyone knows are a must, and are even included on BB10 so I won’t waste your time mentioning these. But…

Neatly for Twitter - Is a pretty cool Twitter client for BlackBerry 10 that you can, and should, try out in case you don’t love the official Twitter for BlackBerry 10 app. Neatly has a cool interface, nice features and is available for only $2.99 on BlackBerry World.

Messaging

We need to stay in touch with our friends and family and, though we wish they were, not all of them are on BBM. That’s where these guys come in:

WhatsApp - Everyone knows WhatsApp and if you don’t, then it’s time to come out from under that rock on top of you. Stay in touch with your friends and family on all other platforms with WhatsApp. And, though it’s not BBM, it’s a good and cheap alternative.

IM+ Pro - For those who also use IM clients such as Gtalk, Facebook Messenger, Yahoo! Messenger, Skype, etc. IM+ Pro is one of the best Multi IM clients out there. For only $4.99 you can chat with your friends on all these networks from a single app. Is that great or what?

TuneIn Radio - With TuneIn you can listen to local and international radio stations on your BlackBerry 10 device. Save your favorite stations to  listen to them later, search by location, language and many more features.

Nobex Radio and Podcasts - For those who don’t love TuneIn. Listen to over 16,000 radio stations, podcasts, share wit your friends on BBM, Facebook or Twitter. Tons of cool features such as sleep timer so you can listen to music while you fall asleep, watch YouTube videos of songs and much more.

News

News for BlackBerry - Every BlackBerry fan must have an app to stay up to date with anything and everything related to BlackBerry. That’s where the N4BB app comes in. It’s definitely a must.

Others

PicShop - Edit photos on the go, add cool effects and make all your photos taken with your Z10 look even better (yep, that’s possible).

BeWeather 10 - You probably know BeWeather and used it on your old BlackBerry. One of the best (and my personal favorite) weather app for BlackBerry, now available for BlackBerry 10. There’s a free and pro version, so try it out before you buy it.

In this tutorial, we will show you how to save any downloaded movies or music from BlackBerry World onto your BlackBerry 10 device.

This can be a critical setting, as it will keep your device’s internal storage free from these files. The standard 16GB can get used up fairly quickly.

Step 1

Open up BlackBerry World on your BlackBerry 10 device. From the top, swipe down. This will show Help, Downloads, Scan Barcode, and Settings. Select the Settings option.

Step 2

Once you’re in the settings menu, click on the option ‘General’.

Step 3

In the ‘General’ setting section you’ll see the section to toggle on/off the ability to save music and video to an SD card.

I think we can all agree that one of the best features on BlackBerry 10 is the new keyboard. It has been greatly improved to make it easier, a lot more accurate and faster to type. You will absolutely love it, if you don’t already, but there are a few tips and tricks that you should know to make your experience with the BB10 keyboard even better.

1. You can add new languages to the keyboard by going to Settings, Language and Input, then Input Languages, and Add/Remove Languages.

2. Misspelled words are underlined in red. To correct it, just tap the word and select the right one from the pop-up menu that shows up. If you want to add the word to your dictionary, just tap “Add to Dictionary”.

3. If you wish to hide the keyboard, simply long press the space button and do a two finger swipe down. To bring it back up, do a two finger swipe up.

4. To use a single special character, swipe down on. If you want to use multiple special characters, use the dedicated button located at the bottom left corner.

5. To lock the capslock, long press the “A” button until a blue line shows up under it. To unlock it, press it again.

6. You can enter special characters, such as accents and “ñ”, by long pressing the corresponding letter.

7. To delete an entire word without having to tap backspace multiple times, just hold the backspace button and swipe to the left.

Just downloaded that new sweet app all of your BBM friends are talking about? Chances are some of them are sending you invites to download the same app.

But you already have it downloaded. That could get really annoying, very quickly. Luckily, BlackBerry was two steps ahead and already thought of that same issue.

Thus, they put into place an option to block future invites for the same app. We’ll use our friend Xitij as an example. He didn’t know that Battery Guru app was already downloaded and he sent an app invite.

You can see all of your BBM invites by swiping over the left navigation bar.

Click on the ‘Invites’ tab to see all of your invites for new contacts and app invites.

After you’ve clicked on the app invite it will give you two options at the bottom in the action bar. You can either download the app (which takes you to BlackBerry World) or ignore the invite, like so:

In the Ignore options screen you can choose to either ignore the contact, ignore future invites to download the specific app, or both.

We’ll choose just to ignore future requests to download the app we already have installed. It’s as simple as that. Happy BBMing!

View conversation threads instead of single messages

Setting your Z10 to display email threads in conversation view instead of appearing as single messages is a great way to manage your messages. To turn on conversation view, complete the following steps:

1. In the BlackBerry Hub, tap the action key 
2. Tap Settings followed by Display and Actions
3. Set Display Style to Conversation
4. Tap Back to save your changes

Tip: Make sure you review the other options found in the Display and Actions settings such as the ability to display your message count, show filed or sent messages as well turning on the ability to download images contained in emails automatically.

Mark Prior Read and Delete Prior

A fast way to manage your messages is the ability to mark messages read in bulk as well as delete emails en mass. To do this, switch to the BlackBerry Hub, tap and hold the date banner and you’ll notice a menu slides in from the right. This menu contains options to Mark Prior Read, Delete Prior as well options to jump to the top or bottom of the BlackBerry Hub.

Note: Depending how your email account is integrated, messages that are removed from your smartphone as a result of using the Delete Prior option will also be removed from your mailbox.

Search (including filters!)

Finding a particular message using BlackBerry 10 is fast thanks to powerful search and filter options. To start a search within the BlackBerry Hub, tap Search along the bottom of the screen. After doing this, you will be able to enter a search term or tap the icon with 3 bars (circled in red below) that appears in the top left corner and you can filter your search results. For example, if you wanted to view your unread messages only all you need to do is start a search followed by tapping the 3 bar icon and selecting the Unread option.

You can also perform a search without tapping the search icon; tap and hold a message in the BlackBerry Hub and the action menu that appears on the right will contain options to Search by Subject and Search by Sender.

Quickly switch between accounts (as well as hiding them)

By default, BlackBerry Hub will display messages and notifications from all of your accounts. If you want to view a specific account however all you need to do is tap the BlackBerry button in the bottom left corner followed by tapping which account you would like to view. After doing this, to view all of your accounts again, tap the account icon in the bottom left corner followed by tapping Hub.

If you want to hide specific accounts from appearing in this menu, complete the following steps:

1. In the BlackBerry Hub, tap the action key 
2. Tap Settings followed by Hub Management
   • To show an account, set the switch to On
   • To hide an account, set the switch to Off

Set your default email address

When you share something (for example, a picture or a website) by email or when you compose a new email, your BlackBerry Z10 sends the email from your default email address. Depending on how you setup your Z10 you may want to change the default email address. To do this, complete the following steps:

1. While viewing your Home screen swipe down from the top of the screen
2. Tap Settings followed by Accounts
3. Along the bottom, tap Set Defaults

Tip: In addition to setting your desired default email address you can also specify which calendar should use as default whenever you are sending event invitations using your smartphone

Bonus: Setup an email signature

To set your email signature while using a BlackBerry Z10 smartphone, complete the following steps:

1. While viewing the BlackBerry Hub, tap the action key
2. Tap Settings followed by Email Accounts
3. Tap an email account, set Auto Signature to On and enter your desired signature
4. When finished, tap Back to save your changes

Lately I have been hearing people complaining about BlackBerry Link not being able to connect to the Z10. One of our friends did a little research and sent us this work around. Please remember there are multiple issues and this might work for some and not for others. So scroll down and read Harold’s step by step.

So first you open the  device manager, as shown in the first pic.

With the device manager open, scroll down to network adapter section.

In my case there was an additional item “Blackberry #3″ or something similar.  Doesn’t matter what the name was, the important part is it had an exclamation point on it because the driver wasn’t valid.  Look for any blackberry related driver with an exclamation through it.

The BlackBerry forums suggested rolling back the driver, but that wasn’t an available option for me, as it was grayed out.

I tried to “update driver” but it said the driver was the most current.

Finally I removed the driver.  I rebooted the computer, then opened up device manager.  It showed what you see now, with no issues.

I then connected my Z10 and it worked

Just got a brand new BlackBerry Z10 or Q10? You’ll certainly want to unlock your device. Unlocking your device allows you to use it on other supported carriers around the world and adds additional resale value to the device.

Follow these simple steps to easily unlock your BlackBerry 10 phone:

Step 1

Find the IMEI number of the BlackBerry 10 device. You can easily do this by opening the phone dialing app and typing *#06#

This will automatically reveal the IMEI number.

Step 2

Now you’ll want to begin the process to get an unlock code generated specific to your device. Visit Unlock4BB.com to begin filling out the form with the information you gained in Step 1.

In the form you will want to make sure you enter the information of the device itself. NOT what carrier you intend to put the device on after you unlock it.

Step 3

Complete the ordering process and wait for your code to be generated. You will receive an email with the unlock code. Sometimes you could receive up to 3 different unlock codes, one of which will be the correct unlock code.

Step 4

To enter the unlock code go to Settings > Security & Privacy > SIM card. Then click the ‘Unlock Network’ button. It will prompt you to enter the unlock code.

If the unlock code was correct you will see a small popup with the message “Network code entered successfully”. All network items now display as ‘Unlocked’.

You only have 10 attempts at entering an unlock code. If by the 6th try the unlock code does not work, DO NOT TRY ALL 10 TIMES as you will then never be able to unlock the device, ever. Contact us immediately.

Just got a BlackBerry 10 device? You’ll likely want to use your favorite search engine in the browser. Changing the default search engine in BlackBerry 10 is much easier than any other legacy BlackBerry.

Open the browser. In the entry field begin typing what you want to search.

This prompts a button at the top-right to appear, which opens a drop-down menu.

Select either Google, Bing, or Yahoo (which uses Bing anyways). That’s it. Now your preferred search engine will remain whatever you selected.

It’s not clear if this will be carrier or location manipulatable. In other words, someone from China may or may not be able to set Baidu as their search engine. Those users with region specific search providers, please let us know what options are available to you!

Side-loading Android and other apps onto BlackBerry 10 and the PlayBook has been fairly easy on a Mac. Although, there wasn’t a simple program like Windows users had enjoyed, until now. (see how to side-load Android apps on Windows here)

In this tutorial you will see how to side-load apps onto BlackBerry 10 using an automator script made by Darryl Kraemer, which simplifies the entire process.

Download these essential tools:

• PlayBook_Tools.zip by HaTaX
• Side-load automator script by Darryl Kraemer
• Have the latest Java Runtime Environment installed. It can be downloaded here.

Unzip Playbook_Tools.zip into your /user/ folder. The files have been rearranged from in the original Playbook_Tools folder already, which takes away a needless step.

Open the Playbook_Tools folder and find file PB-Installer.bat and open in a text editor. Here you’ll see a pre-filled IP address and password. Change these to whatever you will set your BlackBerry 10 device to in development mode. Command + S to quickly save the changes to the file.

On your BlackBerry 10 device, open the device settings. Then proceed to Security and Privacy.

Click on Development Mode at the bottom.

Here you can leave the IP address as is, or change it to whatever you’d like. You’ll want to make sure to switch the on/off toggle to ‘on’. This will prompt you to enter a password.

This IP address and password is what you need to enter into the aforementioned PB-Installer.bat file found in the Playbook_Tools folder.

Unzip and install the ‘BB10 Sideload Android App’.  This is the automator script, which will make installing the Android or other app .BAR file(s) very easy. Otherwise, you would have to open Terminal and entire a script, but that’s just a hassle.

Plug your BlackBerry 10 device into your Mac. You may be prompted to enter the password you set in the development mode screen. Now, find where you installed ‘BB10 Sideload Android App’ program and open it.

Enter the IP address you set on the BlackBerry 10 development mode screen.

Enter the password you set when turning on development mode.

You should by now have moved all of your desired app .BAR files to the Playbook_Tools folder. If so, then go ahead and enter the title for one of them you’d like to install. You can only enter one app at a time.

The automator script will automagically open Terminal and run the script you would have otherwise had to enter manually. You’ll see the app begin to get installed. Pretty nifty, thanks Darryl Kraemer!

Once the app was successfully installed, it will ask if you’d like to install another. If yes, just enter the next app name like before.

Double check it was a success by seeing if in Terminal it says ‘result:success’ and the desired app shows up on your BlackBerry 10 device. Upon following these steps you will be able to successfully side-load Android and other apps onto BlackBerry 10. Happy side-loading!
