*Update*: Dow Jones Newswires’s Carolyn King reports that RIM has refuted Vinh’s charge. RIM calls the speculation “pure fiction,” she writes, and “remains highly committed to the tablet market,” citing an email from RIM.

Research In Motion is said to have stopped production of the BlackBerry PlayBook all together, claims Collins Stewart analyst John Vinh. “While Quanta last week acknowledged that it had laid off a significant number of production workers from a factory focused on producing the PlayBook, our research indicates that the ODM has essentially halted production of the tablet. Additionally, our due diligence indicates that RIMM has canceled development of additional tablet projects.” Vinh said in a note to investors citing anonymous sources within Quanta, the manufacturers for the PlayBook.

We previously told you on the reports that Quanta had stopped half of its production for the PlayBook. There also was said to be nearly 800,000 unshipped PlayBooks. We’ll keep you updated as this story continues to develop.
