BBM Protected was released ahead of schedule back in June and has been received with well regard. The extra level of message encryption has really pleased customers who are in need of the best security around. BlackBerry announced today that BBM Protected will now be available not only for BES only customers, but also those who are making use of BlackBerry Balance.

In a nutshell, BBM Protected is a n instant messaging platform that uses a FIPS 140-2 validated cryptographic module to secure messages in transit and at rest. Three layers of protection make sure that what you’re sending is secure while it is zipping its way on the network. You can check out BlackBerry for the full details on BBM Protected.

BlackBerry Balance is exactly what it sounds like: a way for customers to balance out their work life and personal life on their BB10 devices. It’s a feature that’s been available since January of 2013 when BlackBerry 10 was first released, so chances are you’re slightly familiar with what it does.

BBM Protected will now be available for business customers who are implementing BYOD (Bring Your Own Device), Balance, COPE (Company Owned, Personally Enabled), and COBO (Company Owned, Business Operated) policies.

To activate BBM Protected, all you have to do is contact your IT department and have them activate the policy on their end. That’s literally it. There will be no changes on the end user’s side, as they’ll be using the exact same BBM as before.
