BlackBerry has announced the availability of an update for BBM for Android, and iOS today, which includes a few changes to the sign up process and overall adding of friends experience. Jeff Gadway of the BBM team made sure to let BlackBerry users know that they obviously haven’t been forgotten when it comes to this update.

“BlackBerry users – hold tight, we have a special release of BBM coming for BBOS and BlackBerry 10 smartphones in a couple of weeks. This special release of BBM for BlackBerry smartphones will include many of the things we’ve talked about here…and a few special things added for good measure.”

The update that’s being pushed for Android and iOS users this week has the following changes:

Easier sign up

The sign up process for BBM has been cut down to get chatting and sharing even faster. Name. Email. Password. That’s all you need to get started on BBM. For those already on BBM today, this change won’t have any effect on you.

Easier Friending

Another thing that’s been improved is how you add new BBM contacts through email. Today, it’s a somewhat cumbersome and complicated process. This new release will simplify the process so that when you receive a BBM invite by email – all you have to do is click the link and presto, you’re BBM contacts. No need to send a PIN invite back.

New Emoticons & more

BBM for Android will have 16 new emoticons in this release – before iPhone and BlackBerry users get them. The updates tab has also been renamed to “Feeds” which according to BlackBerry “helps better represent what you find there – the latest statuses and profile photos from your BBM contacts and the newest posts from the BBM Channels you follow.”

We should be expecting this new version of BBM for BlackBerry 10 and BBOS devices in a couple of weeks. I can’t help but wonder what “special things added” will be. Any ideas? Sound off in the comments below!
