BlackBerry is teaming up with the second-largest U.S. defense contractor, Boeing Co., to create a secretive, self-destructing device for U.S. Defense and Homeland Security personnel.
For BlackBerry, this new partnership gives them an added bump on the already huge lead over other OEMs and software manufacturers within the U.S. government.
During today’s earnings call, BlackBerry CEO John Chen briefly announced the new arrangement. “We’re pleased to announce that Boeing is collaborating with BlackBerry to provide a secure mobile solution for Android devices utilizing our BES12 platform. That, by the way, is all they allow me to say.”
There are no real details to this particular device. We don’t even really know if it’ll be running BlackBerry 10 or Android either. I also wonder if we’ll ever get a chance to see this self-destructing device or get a glimpse of how it’ll work. Either way, chalk this one up as a BlackBerry win. Great partnership, and great idea. Hopefully we get to learn more about this device soon.
