Last week, BlackBerry released their BlackBerry 10.3 developer roadmap. We learned that the 10.3 SDKs are scheduled to land in May of this year, and Adobe AIR will no longer be included as a runtime in OS 10.3.
What wasn’t highlighted by BlackBerry was the company’s planned release date for BlackBerry 10.3 update that would see the discontinuation of AIR support.
According to the AIR End of Support notice FAQ, BlackBerry states the following for ‘When is the Adobe AIR runtime being removed?’:
“We expect BlackBerry 10 OS version 10.3.1 to be commercially available toward the end of the year. BlackBerry 10 OS version 10.3.1 and above will not support the Adobe AIR runtime.”
Developers that use AIR are encouraged to port their apps over to Android or WebWorks, thus keeping their apps compatible with BlackBerry 10.
BlackBerry 10.3 looks to be bringing many new features and a revamped UI, which can be seen in our hands-on video of a very early beta.
If BlackBerry holds true to their word, we will see this tremendous update drop on our BlackBerry devices by the end of 2014.
