When BlackBerry first announced it was reviewing ways to monetize BBM, many had wondered if the traditionally free service would become ad supported. BlackBerry later confirmed that BBM would soon feature ‘Sponsored Posts’, but it was unclear whether it would be isolated to only iOS and Android users. However, BlackBerry looks to be rolling out sponsored posts to normal BlackBerry users on BBM too.
Until today, we haven’t seen any BBM sponsored posts outside of the beta. I am not in the BBM beta to receive the sponsored posts. Here’s what it looked like as I scrolled through my BBM feed on my Z30:
You could easily share the sponsored post with users. Or, you could click on the ad for more details, where you could share again, accept the ad, or ignore it as shown:
Once you ignore a sponsored post it is supposed to never show again. However, it appears to not have worked properly. I later accepted and nothing happened either. Perhaps this was merely a glitch in the matrix and BlackBerry did not intentionally want to roll out the sponsored post.
Nevertheless, now you get a better understanding of how sponsored posts from BBM Channels will look throughout your feed. Do you think these are seamless or intrusive to your BBM experience?
