Bsquare to Distribute QNX Operating System and Development Tool Products

Distribution Agreement Expands Customer Access to Medical, Industrial Automation and General Embedded Software and Tools

BELLEVUE, WA and OTTAWA–(Marketwire – February 26, 2013) – BSQUARE Corporation (NASDAQ:BSQR), a leading enabler of smart connected systems, and QNX Software Systems Limited, a leader in software platforms for connected embedded systems, today announced that Bsquare has become an authorized distributor of QNX® operating system and development tool products in the United Kingdom. Bsquare will also continue to provide engineering services for QNX-based development within the medical, industrial automation and general embedded markets worldwide.
The QNX® Neutrino® realtime operating system (RTOS) is the platform of choice for high reliability and high performance systems. QNX technology drives mission-critical applications for a variety of vertical market solutions:

  • Medical devices: primary life support, in vitro and healthcare
  • Lifestyle products: automotive infotainment and telematics systems, BlackBerry® 10 smartphones
  • Industrial control: safety-critical systems requiring certification to standards such as IEC 61508 SIL3
  • Networking and gateway products

The QNX Neutrino RTOS is based on a microkernel architecture, in which device drivers, networking stacks, file systems, and applications run as separate, user-space processes. Every process is isolated from other running processes, rendering the system far more resilient to bugs and software failures, and making it fundamentally more reliable.
“Bsquare is very familiar with the QNX Neutrino operating system, having provided engineering services on the platform for a number of years,” said Andrea Blaylock, director, channel strategies, QNX Software Systems. “We are pleased to expand our relationship with Bsquare and look forward to working together to grow the community of QNX-based solutions through licensing, development tools and engineering services.”
“As the embedded market continues to grow, the need for an operating system that can support mission-critical solutions is also growing,” said Mike Stipe, Bsquare senior vice president of worldwide sales and marketing. “The addition of QNX product distribution to the Bsquare portfolio fills a need for our customers who are creating medical, automotive, industrial and networking products that require mission-critical functionality. This distribution agreement complements the QNX engineering work that Bsquare already does worldwide by giving Bsquare the ability to provide end-to-end support for OEMs and ODMs utilizing the QNX Neutrino operating system for their smart connected systems.”
Bsquare will redistribute QNX Neutrino RTOS and QNX® Momentics® Tool Suite products in the United Kingdom and will provide professional services including driver and application development as well as quality assurance and documentation for QNX-based devices worldwide. All Bsquare UK projects are implemented under ISO 9001:2008 certified systems and the company’s UK office is ISO 13485:2003 certified for medical systems development. For more information visit:

This colorized transmission electron micrograph (TEM) revealed some of the ultrastructural morphology displayed by an Ebola virus virion. See PHIL 1832 for a black and white version of this image.

Where is Ebola virus found in nature? The exact origin, locations, and natural habitat (known as the "natural reservoir") of Ebola virus remain unknown. However, on the basis of available evidence and the nature of similar viruses, researchers believe that the virus is zoonotic (animal-borne) and is normally maintained in an animal host that is native to the African continent. A similar host is probably associated with Ebola-Reston which was isolated from infected cynomolgous monkeys that were imported to the United States and Italy from the Philippines. The virus is not known to be native to other continents, such as North America.
