Dolby has announced that they filed a lawsuit against Research In Motion regarding audio patent infringement. The lawsuit seeks to halt sales of BlackBerry smartphones using this technology, as well as the BlackBerry PlayBook. The lawsuit is over Dolby’s efficient digital audio compression technologies. It allows manufacturers and consumers to provide and enjoy high quality audio while using extremely limited amounts of transmission and/or storage space for such audio.

“Litigation was regrettably our last resort after RIM declined to pay for the use of Dolby’s technology,” said the executive vice president and general counsel of Dolby. “We have a duty to protect our intellectual property.”

Let us all hope RIM and Dolby reach an agreement because halting sales of BlackBerry smartphones and the PlayBook could really hurt RIM. Let us know your thoughts!
