Who knew the Lord of the Rings can help free up space on an iPhone?

More often than not, the quest to free up space on an iPhone is nothing short of daunting, as it involves relentless decision makings on which files and apps to keep and which to let go.

For everyone in this predicament, it often becomes an emotional journey.

Parting ways with someone or something is always sad. When we’re faced with the bitter truth that our handhelds are already running low on memory, we are often given two choices.

Do we part ways with the precious files and apps that we have stored on our phones? Or do we part with our money to get a bigger storage?

Apparently, there is a third choice. And the Lord of the Rings movie has something to do with it.

A Reddit user who goes by the name eavesdroppingyou uncovered a very peculiar albeit very brilliant way to deceive iPhones into freeing up space without having to delete anything or purchase anything.

And this is how it goes.

Disclaimer: This trick isn’t guaranteed to work on EVERY iPhone or iOS device, but it did work well for iPhones running on iOS 9.3, as well as iPads running on iOS 8.3.

Renting a movie

First, you will have to open the iTunes app, and then you will have to try to rent a movie — The Lord of the Rings : The Two Towers movie, to be specific. If you want to free up space on your iPhone, you will have to do exactly as you are told. It doesn’t matter if you don’t like the movie. The Reddit entry says it’s this movie you have to rent. So you rent it.

But you can try another long movie, as long as it makes you happy. Do remember, however, that it has to be a really long movie.

And you don’t have to worry, you won’t be charged for anything at all by doing this. You’ll see.

The Lord of the Rings: Twin Towers

As soon as you’ve successfully opened your iTunes Store app, head over to the ‘Movies’ section. Once you’re in that section, search for The Lord of the Rings: Twin Towers movie, or any other movie guaranteed to be equally as long. Select the HD version. Hit RENT HD MOVIE.

This might or might not take a while, but after some time, you will get a notification that says you can not download the movie that you’re trying to rent, because you do not have enough storage on your device.

This is how the prompt will look like.
