Research In Motion is up in After Hours trading as Bloomberg has reported IBM has approached RIM about acquiring its Network Operations Centers (NOCs), which secure and compress content delivered to BlackBerry devices. According to the report, IBM made an informal approach about possibly acquiring the division.
Some have called on RIM to turn its NOCs into a standalone business that services multiple platforms. But Jim Balsillie was reportedly kicked out for wanting to do this. Bloomberg adds no one has shown interest in RIM’s hardware ops. James Sciales, a spokesman for Armonk, New York-based IBM, said the company doesn’t comment on rumors or speculation, as did Nick Manning, a spokesman for RIM.
What would you think of IBM purchasing RIM’s Network Operations Centers? Could the influx of fresh money help RIM while they struggle before the launch of BlackBerry 10?
