To say that emerging markets are important to BlackBerry’s continued life-force is an understatement. The emerging markets are absolutely critical. It’s evident that BlackBerry understands this with the announcement of another BlackBerry 7 smartphone to battle the low-end Android devices.
New reports indicate that Indonesian users account for 15 million, a little over 20%, of BlackBerry’s 72 million subscriber base. BlackBerry is reportedly increasing their hiring in the region and plans to release the BlackBerry Q5 at an unsubsidized price of IDR 4M ($397).
The Q5 is nearly half the price of the Z10 and Q10, which are available for IDR 7M ($695). It will be interesting to see how the upcoming BlackBerry 9720 is positioned in the region.
