There’s an ongoing battle for the 3rd spot amongst mobile ecosystems. For quite sometime, BlackBerry held third place, while Android and iOS began dominating.

Speaking to The Verge, Microsoft’s senior Windows Phone product manager Larry Lieberman deems Windows Phone to be in third place and adds that they’re not afraid of BlackBerry.

“We think we’re solidly the third ecosystem right now,” says Lieberman. “That’s a huge announcement in some respects.” Microsoft is apparently unafraid of BlackBerry.

“I don’t think they can bring to the table some of the things we have,” Lieberman says. “The fact like we’re delivering across such a different set of price points to such a large audience.”

However, Microsoft doesn’t feel comfortable for only being in third place. Lieberman believes Windows Phone is “growing faster than anyone else right now.”

It will be quite interesting to see how the battle for third place pans out. Nokia’s Lumia, the premier device making use of Windows Phone operating system, has been estimated at not making near a profit as BlackBerry does on the Z10.

Nokia is rapidly losing money and market share. This could potentially spell dire things for Microsoft and continued Windows Phone penetration. Nevertheless, we’ll learn the progress of BlackBerry 10 in the upcoming earnings call this Friday, June 28th.
