An IT policy allows a BlackBerry® Enterprise Server administrator of your company/employer to allow and restrict various things on a BlackBerry smartphone, such as being able to use the camera or install apps and games from the BlackBerry App World™ storefront. In the event that you no longer have your personal BlackBerry smartphone activated on a BlackBerry Enterprise Server, you can optionally remove the obsolete IT policy so any previously restricted features will be free to use.
Before we begin, the methods I’ll be showing you are to be used in the event you have already been removed from the BlackBerry Enterprise Server and you cannot contact the BlackBerry administrator who applied the IT Policy to remove it for you, (i.e you have left your company/employer and your BlackBerry smartphone still has an IT policy on it). If you do have contact with the BlackBerry Enterprise Server administrator and you would like to be removed from the BlackBerry Enterprise Server, reach out to them first as they can help remove the IT policy before removing your account. Something to keep in mind before we begin is that in order to use a BlackBerry Enterprise Server, an IT policy must be applied; i.e. if you remove the IT policy, you will not receive emails from your company’s/employer’s BlackBerry Enterprise Server.
To reiterate: If you’re using a “work device,” do not remove the IT policy as detailed below unless you have permission from your IT department, otherwise your device will not work with the company’s BlackBerry Enterprise Server.
With that being said, let’s start!
In order to complete the steps below, you must have a BlackBerry smartphone that is using BlackBerry® Device Software 4.3 or higher. If you don’t know what version you are using, check out our blog post on how to identify BlackBerry Device Software versions. I’d also recommend checking out our blog post “What is an IT Policy is and how can I view it?” to determine if an IT policy is present on your BlackBerry smartphone before proceeding any further.
BlackBerry Desktop Software for PC
If you use a PC, complete the steps below to remove the IT policy from your BlackBerry smartphone usingBlackBerry® Desktop Manager 4.7 to 6.1.
Note: Before you begin, this procedure deletes all data stored on the BlackBerry smartphone, so back up your BlackBerry smartphone before performing this procedure. For more information on how to make a backup using BlackBerry Desktop Software for PC, see KB12487.
1. Connect the smartphone to the computer.
2. Close BlackBerry Desktop Software for PC if it is open.
3. From the Start menu, click Programs -> Accessories -> Command Prompt.
- Note: If you are using Windows® Vista™ or Windows® 7, you might need to right-click the Command Prompt application and choose ”Run as Administrator”.
4. Find the Apploader folder by typing cd C:\Program Files\Common Files\Research In Motion\Apploaderand then pressing Enter.
- Note: For computers using a 64-bit version of Windows, navigate to C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Research In Motion\Apploader instead
5. Type loader.exe /resettofactory
- Note: Enter your BlackBerry smartphone password if prompted.
6. Note that after entering this command, the AppLoader folder path is shown again. This means the command was run successfully, which means that the BlackBerry smartphone will restart and begin a wipe process which will remove the IT policy.
After completing these steps, you will no longer have an IT policy applied to your BlackBerry smartphone, so you can restore your data and continue using your device. For information on how to restore data you’ve previously backed up, check out the BlackBerry Desktop Software for PC user guide.
BlackBerry Desktop Software for Mac
For those using a Mac computer, follow the instructions below to remove an IT policy from a BlackBerry smartphone using BlackBerry Desktop Software for Mac 2.1 to 2.2.
Note: Before you begin, this procedure deletes all data stored on the BlackBerry smartphone, so back up your BlackBerry smartphone before proceeding. For more information on how to make a backup using BlackBerry Desktop Software for Mac, see KB18776.
1. Connect the BlackBerry smartphone to your Mac computer
2. Close BlackBerry Desktop Software, if it is open.
3. On the Mac computer, open the ”Terminal” application.
A) Tip: Use Spotlight to quickly find the Terminal application
4. Type cd /Applications/BlackBerry\ Desktop\ Software.app/Contents/MacOS/ and press enter.
5. If you do not have a password set on your BlackBerry smartphone, complete step A. If you do have a password set, complete step B and replace with the password you have set currently on your BlackBerry smartphone.
A) Type ./bbdm resettofactory
B) Type ./bbdm -password resettofactory
6. Notice after entering this command the cursor is shown again. This means the command was run successfully which means the BlackBerry smartphone will restart, and start a wipe process which removes the IT policy.
