I know there are bunch of people out there like me; music junkies, can’t go out the door without their headphones and MP3 player or probably have their phones loaded with hundreds of songs from their favorite bands. Personally, I enjoy my music a lot better with my headphones but sometimes you just gotta share! Walking around with PC speakers doesn’t seem like a smart idea and there are some speakers claiming to be “portable” but they really aren’t. There are times when you’re hanging out with your friends when you need a good speaker that you can just carry around and listen to music with it without the hassle of having to set up an entire sound system or something like it. The Motorola MotoROKR EQ5 Portable Wireless Speaker does this job for you. It surprised me, it’ll probably surprise you too. Hit the break for the full review!
In the box you will find the MotoROKR EQ5 speaker, a microUSB power supply, 3.5mm stereo minijack cable and a manual or quick start guide, which you probably won’t need since it’s pretty easy to use. This speaker has bluetooth 2.0 technology, SRS WOW HD enhanced stereo performance, speakerphone and controls for hands-free functionality, noise-reduction and echo-cancellation to make calls clearer.
First thing I noticed when I saw the EQ5 was the size. It is way smaller than I thought it would be, which could be good or bad, depending on how look at it: smaller speaker, better portability or worst sound quality. For me, it was a good thing; portable speakers should be portable, and it’s obvious you’re not gonna throw a party with them. This speaker is really small, could easily be smaller than most smartphones out there and a lot lighter too.
The MotoROKR EQ5 has two small speakers on the front side and button panel in-between the speakers. The button panel has 5 buttons: 2 Volume buttons, back, play/pause and next buttons. On the back side it has a built-in stand so you can place the speaker wherever you want.
What I liked the most about this speaker is that it’s completely wireless. It has rechargeable battery so you don’t have to have it plugged in to the power to use it. You can connect your iPod, MP3, phone or any other media player with either bluetooth or a 3.5 mm audio jack. Between the volume rockers is a small led light that changes depending on what the speaker is doing: blue when bluetooth is active and ready to be found by your device, green when it’s connected via bluetooth and purple when it’s connected via audio jack. The playback buttons will not work when the device is connected via audio jack, which totally makes sense.
The MotoROKR EQ5 is a pretty decent speaker. The volume will reach levels loud enough to make you have to shout to be heard over the music. Considering the size and purpose of this speaker, I’d say the sound is really good. If you set it to the highest level possible you’ll hear a little static on the background, but nothing you can’t live with. I even found a workaround for it: if you set the device’s level to the max and then level up the volume on the speaker you might not even notice the static. The speaker has a max level, obviously, but no matter how loud you set the device and/or the speaker, it will only reach a certain level, after that you’ll hear a “beep” whenever you try to turn the volume higher than that. On the top of the MotoROKR EQ5 is a button for making voice calls so, if you wanted, you could even use this speaker as a hands-free. It is truly awesome for conference calls, and obviously works a lot better than your normal built-in phone speaker.
And last, but definitely not least, battery life. Though the specifications says up to 8 hours, I’ll say that depends. When I used this with Bluetooth battery lasted around 7-8 hours, which I think is pretty decent. When I used it via 3.5mm jack it was a little longer, maybe 8-9 hours, maybe a little more. I doubt your phone is going to last more than that with the music player AND bluetooth on, though maybe an MP3 or iPod can make it longer than that but I doubt you will have to use this for longer than 9 hours straight. To sum up, it might not be the best one in the market but it is definitely a great option, worth having. It will probably be useful in more situations than you might think of when you first see it. You can get the Motorola MotoROKR EQ5 from the N4BB store for only $99.95, you won’t regret it!
