RIM is set to meet the UK phone and broadband regulator Ofcom, over concerns that children and teens under the age of 18 are using BlackBerrys to access pornography. UK mobile phone networks voluntarily implement filters to block adult content. However, since BlackBerry’s data runs through RIM’s own servers, the carriers cannot apply their filter to a BlackBerry.
“It is to do with the way in which the BlackBerry operating system works. We are very concerned and want to get this resolved as quickly as possible”, the regulator said, speaking to The Inquirer. However, RIM did offer its own filtering system to carriers. T-Mobile was the only carrier to utilize the service. It is unknown if others opt out due to reasons related to costs.
