Jeffries & Co. analyst Peter Misek and RBC Capital Markets analyst Mike Abramsky have estimated that Research In Motion sold over 50,000 BlackBerry PlayBook tablets on launch day. Abramksy looked at 70 different stores, which had a sell-out of 11%. Abramsky also checked 180 Best Buy stores online and found some were listed out of stock. About 91% of the stores had no 64GB models, while 87% were out of 32GB versions and 13 percent had no 16GB versions.
Misek relatively agreed with Abramsky, suggesting the PlayBook sold at about 45,000 units. “If correct, 45K+ sell through on the first day would be a success,” Misek wrote in his research note. He also suggests that up to 500,000 PlayBooks could sell in the Spring quarter.
