ElcomSoft has updated their Phone Password Breaker software. They’ve included the ability to recover BlackBerry device passwords. Elcomsoft said that before it developed the product, it was believed that there was no way to figure out a device password on a BlackBerry or PlayBook tablet. BlackBerry smartphones are configured to wipe all data on the phone if a password is typed incorrectly 10 times in a row, but if the user-selectable “Security Password” option is enabled to encrypt media card data it is possible to recover the master password.

By analyzing information stored on encrypted media cards, Elcomsoft Phone Password Breaker can try millions of password combinations per second, recovering a fairly long 7-character password in a matter of hours.

Phone Password Breaker software provides forensic access to encrypted information stored in BlackBerry devices. By recovering the original passwords protecting information stored in compatible devices, the tool opens access to SMS and email messages, call history, contacts and organizer data, Web browsing history, voicemail and email accounts and settings.

The option to encrypt media card data is turned off by default. However, ElcomSoft claims 30% of BlackBerry users enable it for extra security. The BlackBerry password recovery feature is only available in the professional version of ElcomSoft’s Phone Password Breaker priced at $123. Check out more information here.
