Back in 2009 Skyfire started a beta build of their mobile browser. Unfortunately, they canceled the project to focus on platforms such as Google Android and Apple iOS. it was unclear at the time if they would ever resume production of Skyfire for future BlackBerry devices.
In a recent blog post by Jeff Glueck, Skyfire’s CEO, he said:
“We do expect to bring Skyfire 2.0 to additional platforms, and have begun discussions with some carriers and OEMs to decide which will be our next OS. Microsoft’s new Windows Phone 7 and Nokia’s MeeGo platform are both shaping up as platforms with a lot of potential and the recent launch of the new Blackberry OS 6 with a WebKit browser core makes for interesting potential for a future release of Skyfire 2.0. We value feedback from our users, so please let us know what platform you would like to see Skyfire on next and just as importantly let your wireless carrier know that you want Skyfire!”
It is unclear what kind of timeline we are looking at. It also seems the Skyfire team may still keep BlackBerry support on the back-burner to focus on Windows Phone 7 and Nokia MeeGo. Neverthless, BlackBerry still holds the largest online user activity and it would make sense to us for them to eventually bring the Skyfire browser to BlackBerry devices.
